Prof. Muhammad Bakari Professor Muhammad Bakari became a full Professor in Internal Medicine at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in 2015. He completed his PhD training in 2006 at the Karolinska Institutet (KI) in Sweden, after his MD (1988) and MMed training (1993) with the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) respectively. In 1994 he completed a Dermatology Fellowship training in the Republic of Ireland. He served as an Associate Dean, School of Medicine, MUHAS from 2007 to 2011, and then as the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Planning, Finance and Administration (DVC-PFA) of MUHAS from 2011 to 2015. He also served as Tanzania’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO) between 2015 and 2020. He thereafter returned to work as a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine of the School of Clinical Medicine, MUHAS. He has led, as the Principal Investigator or the Project Coordinator of a number of research collaborations between institutions in the South and those in the North. He has published extensively, especially on various aspects of HIV and TB, and his interest has currently grown to include determinants and control of non-communicable diseases (NCD’s). He has also been involved in a number of Committees to address critical issues of national interest.
