Dr. Grace Magembe Dr. Grace Magembe is a leading Tanzanian public health expert with extensive experience in clinical practice, governance, and health policy. She holds a Medical Degree, a Master’s in Public Health, and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute. In February 2025, she was appointed Chief Medical Officer of the United Republic of Tanzania, following senior leadership roles at the Ministry of Health and the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Governments.
Dr. Magembe has played a pivotal role in strengthening Tanzania’s health systems to advance equitable access to care and accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage. She has championed evidence-based policy, health workforce development, and sustainable financing for HIV, maternal and child health, and epidemic preparedness. She is amongst the few clinicians who started the Care and Treatment Program for HIV in Tanzania over 20 years ago and its institutionalization. Her leadership during recent public health emergencies has reinforced integrated, community-cantered approaches to disease prevention and response.
She serves on several global and national boards, including The Lancet Commission on Disability and Global Health and Tanzania’s Antimicrobial Resistance Coordination Committee. Dr. Magembe continues to advocate for partnerships, innovation, and resilient health systems that promote health equity and sustainable development across Africa.
