Betty Nanzigu Mwesigwa

Dr. Betty Nanzigu Mwesigwa is a holder of a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from Makerere University and an MSc in Clinical Trials from the University of London/London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom. With over eighteen (18) cumulative years of experience in infectious diseases clinical research and HIV prevention, care, and treatment, Dr. Mwesigwa leads HIV vaccine development, remission, and cure research studies, including trials testing candidate vaccines for HIV, Ebola, Marburg, and Bilharzia.

Dr. Mwesigwa holds a research award from the United States National Institutes of Health, focusing on improving cervical cancer prevention and precancer treatment among women living with HIV in Uganda. With 9 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry in the United Kingdom, Dr. Mwesigwa gained valuable knowledge in the processes and economics of developing and marketing safe, effective medicines and medical interventions, including vaccines.

Currently, Dr. Mwesigwa serves as the Deputy Executive Director at MUWRP and as a Co-PI on the BRILLIANT consortium, whose overall objective is to develop and evaluate HIV vaccine candidates originating from the African continent. Dr. Mwesigwa has a great interest in infectious diseases prevention and serves as a mentor for early career researchers.
